Was great to see this written so professionally

What you wrote about has been a strong gut feeling of mine for quite some time. Was great to see this written so professionally. I had a real estate & finance company before the GFC. I got completely wiped out because all the banks that had agreed to finance all the properties I had sold to clients had literally run out of money and could not settle!! Best kept secret in Australia. So they ordered their valuers to do 'Spot Vals' on all the properties they had already agreed to finance my client's into in order to make sure the Loan to Value ratio went over their threshold and no longer qualify for finance. This meant they didn't have to settle and I lost the property business, my finance business and a call centre as well. I went from having 30 staff to being left with gold coins in a jar in the space of just 3 months. What you are speaking about is bang on. Well written. Thank you for putting this information in such a format. The big one is definitely still coming.

This book is one of those pillars. If you have a solid knowledge of the hiragana and a basic yet formal understanding of the syntax of written Japanese, this book will work for you. On each page, the kanji are presented with rubi the FIRST time. After that, you have to remember the reading just for that page. The rubi is repeated elsewhere. Lack of kanji memorization is not a hindrance to using this book. The illustrations are basic diagrams in black and white that explain the sentence structure. There are no pictures of people, locations,etc.

The author does a clinical, yet thorough job of explaining how the Japanese language is organized. It helps you to anchor yourself in the sea of words and sounds. The explanations do not require expertise in linguistics. It is not leisure reading but persistence should pay off.
The key is getting clued into the organization of the foreign language so you can identify your weak spots and better direct your studies: particles/postpositions, verbal and adjectival types, etc. You do not need to be an expert in everything at once. But the basic grammar is important if you want to be a fluent speaker. This will not automatically make you speak fluent Japanese. That takes time, practice and LANGUAGE CDS. But, it may help you with listening and reading comprehension of authentic Japanese. You want to understand enough to build up the confidence that you can become a competent reader, writer and speaker of Japanese.

Absolutely excellent

I've been studying Japanese for 20 years, and I own many grammar books. If I had to pick two of the best, this would be one of them, along with "Using Japanese" which I also review here on Amazon. This covers all the basic and intermediate grammar you would need in order to communicate comfortably in every day life and beyond. I honestly don't have anything negative to say about this book. It is well-structured, thorough, and gives tons of examples for each grammatical concept. If you want a good reference book to come back to for years to come, this won't let you down.

Interesting, well paced and cohesive

If this book had been written a decade or more later, it'd be considered derivative, but at the time the themes of corporate post-collapse dominance (and their heartless manipulation of individuals) & a gritty, grim, realist approach to extraplanetary settlement were fresh. The plotting, prose and characterization are all solid or better.

I enjoyed it while I was reading it, and am still thinking about parts of it a couple weeks later - perhaps the ultimate compliment. I bought it mostly because it was cheap, but it made me want to read more of this author's work, so if the price was intended as a loss leader it was certainly effective.

Recommended to pretty much all SF fans.

A First Step Into...

It's hard to know how to review Frontera, as a debut novel? It is Lewis Shiner's debut novel it was originally published in 1984, but is part of the definitive editions Subterranean Press is publishing of Shiner's work. So, do I take into account Shiner's later work to give the novel context? Or should I review it as any literary debut?

Lewis Shiner is categorized with cyberpunk writers like William Gibson. I really don't see it, Frontera and the other science fiction that Shiner has written seems like hard sci-fi more in the mold of Heinlein. Shiner is of the generation of writers that came to the forefront in the early 80's, that may account for the categorization. Whatever label you want to slap on Shiner's work what you're getting is good solid writing.

The world of Frontera could be tomorrow. All the world's governments have collapsed leaving the corporations to take over. Frontera is a colony on Mars that is assumed lost by those on Earth until Pulsystems, which is the corporation that has taken over the U.S., starts receiving mysterious messages from Mars about a machine with quantum possibilities. A slap-dash reconnaissance mission is thrown together to see if the colony has somehow managed to survive. The mission is led by Reese, an aging astronaut who was the first person on Mars and his only other option in life is drinking himself to death. Kane is a Pulsystems VP and former soldier sent with a mission that is obscure even to himself and pushes him to the edge of insanity. When the mission discovers the Frontera colony alive, if not totally well, they discover there is a secret on Mars that the colonists aren't willing to share.

If you've already read Shiner's later more mature writing you'll see Frontera as a starting point. You can see some of the theme's Shiner will later adopt and adapt more fully in later works, such as contentious relationships between fathers and sons. In Frontera's case, between surrogate father figure and son relationships. Older readers of Shiner's will be able to create the context it belongs in and the evolution of Shiner as a writer. If you're new to Shiner's work, it's the natural starting point and a literary debut that will lead you to the next book and the next.

Another of Shiner's novels Glimpses is also available in a definitive edition. Collected Stories is a good overview of Shiner's work.

Early cyberpunk novel

The bigger luminaries of the cyberpunk world are quick to include Shiner as one of their own, and this is the book which makes the cut. An entertaining novel in and of itself, it obviously has a lot of cyberpunk staples which have gotten pretty trite. One of the most interesting themes of the book parallels one of the character's journey through a Jungian archetypical legend that hearkens back to high school English class.

However, attempts to use SPICE for worst-case analysis (WCA) reveal several shortcomings, including: a 400-sample limit for Monte Carlo Analysis (MCA); lack of Rot-Sum-Square (RSS) analysis, asymmetric component tolerances, Fast MCA, or AC sensitivity capability; no single-run method of tolerancing inputs; and no predefined beta (skewed) or bimodal (gapped) distributions for MCA. While several commercial versions of SPICE may have corrected some of these limitations, they still remain rather expensive.

Based on extensive experience in WCA, Node List Tolerance Analysis: Enhancing SPICE Capabilities with Mathcad presents software methods that overcome the many limitations of SPICE WCA using less expensive tools. The author demonstrates correct and incorrect methods of extreme value analysis, demonstrates the necessity of tolerancing multiple inputs, and provides output histograms for unusual inputs. He also shows how to detect non-monotonic components, which cause severe errors in all WCA methods except MCA. The book also includes demonstrations of tolerance analysis of three-phase AC circuits.
