Still Great After 50 Years

"The Political Economy of Growth" is a long essay on 20th century capitalism and its implications (mostly negative) for economic growth and development. The analysis is informed by Marxist concepts but isn't warped by Marxist dogma. The text is droll, almost Galbraithian, and hyper-alert to the cliches of capitalism. It's a pleasure to read.

Unfortunately, the book was also written long ago, in 1957. The world has changed a lot since then. The Washington Consensus has come and gone. China has emerged as an economic giant. Central planning has collapsed almost everywhere. And, contrary to the expectations of the author, Paul Baran, capitalist economies have grown significantly (if not evenly) since the 1950s. So, "The Political Economy of Growth" is definitely anachronistic.

Nevertheless, it is still worth reading. It's just packed with great ideas on everything from the impact of oligopolies in the U.S. to the role of British imperialism in destroying the Indian economy. Moreover, Baran had a genius for weaving bracing polemic out of deep erudition and deep political outrage. He was particularly skilled at exposing the role of mainstream economics in upholding the political and economic status quo in modern America.

Bottomline: In spite of its age, "The Political Economy of Growth" will appeal to readers of any political persuasion who are interested in economics and the history of the modern world. Read it.

An interesting period piece

The most interesting aspect of the new edition is the recent forward by Philip Johnson (1995). In it he humorously describes his relationship with "The International Style," and how dated the book now appears. He also notes that it was Alfred Barr who introduced Hitchcock and him to this new world of architecture. It was Barr who had written extensively on the subject and dubbed it an "International Style."
Not surprisingly, nearly all the buildings included in this catalog for the 1932 MoMA exhibit date from 1927. This was a pivotal year in the Modern Movement. Le Corbusier's "Toward a New Architecture" first appeared in English. The new improved Bauhaus opened its doors in Dessau, in Gropius' newly constructed complex. The International Competition for the League of Nations building was held with Le Corbusier losing out on a technicality. A building exhibition, laid out by Mies van der Rohe, was sponsored by the Deutscher Werkbund in Stuttgart. Modern Architecture had come of age.
The selections are interesting for their range of architects but have several notable omissions. Among them Rudolf Schindler, who dismissed the idea of an "International Style," in a letter to Johnson. Modern architects then and now hate the idea of a "style," believing their works to be based on a set of constructive and compositional principles which transcend the notion of style.
Nevertheless, the name stuck. Hitchcock and Johnson are widely credited for bringing the International Style to America, even though some early works by Neutra, Hood, Howe and Lescaze were included in the exhibition. Most importantly, Johnson lured Mies to America, where he would achieve his most lofty aspirations. The book makes for an interesting read but has long been superceded by more insightful and penetrating books on the subject.

an essential historical account caught in time.

As always, Hitchcock is a captivating and insightful writer of architecture. Very good reading for an American centric perspective on how European modernism was re-packaged and made presentable to American sensibilities (the pragmatist vs. the political). Interesting that Wright is excluded from the 'group' yet the Euros of the day acknowledge his influence in development of their ideas.
Also really good follow-up articles in the Feb 1982 issue of Progressive Architecture.

Good guide for those looking for formal methods that are actually useful

This book describes Alloy, a tool for specifying and analyzing data structures and other relationships within your programs. The book walks you through a tutorial, showing you how you can find the bugs in your specifications before you actually write any code, and then goes into the details of the language and its semantics.

I think I was exactly the target audience for this book (and the Alloy language), as I write a lot of Java software and have been looking for a practical specification tool. I've heard of other people who were less happy with this book, as they were trying to learn _about_ Alloy rather than learning Alloy itself. There is some material at the beginning and end that compares and contrasts Alloy with other specification languages, but the real value of this book comes in the middle where it teaches you how to use Alloy effectively.

theoretical but practical

This book does a great job of describing the theory behind Alloy -- the relational logic, the concepts, the overarching motivation --- while connecting it to real-world practical examples. It's suitable for both academics and engineers, theoreticians and practitioners. The latest edition is updated for the new Alloy 4 syntax, which includes a number of small improvements and simplifications over the prior version.

You probably want the printed edition. Unfortunately, the Kindle edition version is the older the first edition.

This is not Amazon's fault -- MIT Press site has no ebook version of the second edition.

A young girl's journey to health

I read and loved this book as an adolescent. I recently saw it at the library and decided to take it out and read it again. I just finished re-reading it and found it as powerful as I remembered, possibly even more so.
I Never Promised You a Rose Garden presents a complete picture of mental illness from the patient's point of view, without the stigma of wrongness that is frequently associated with it. The picture painted is a very real one, from Deborah's relief when the doctors confirm what she's known all along, that something is not right, to the way her family deals with the fact of her illness. Greenberg/Green evokes very strong emotions with her writing. You feel Deborah's fear that her secret world of Yr will punish her for revealing its existence to her doctor, and you share in her triumph when she begins to make her way back to the world. I put down this book with a little more understanding of how it must feel to be mentally ill. I would recommend it to anyone, teen or adult.

A Book for All Time

I read this book many years ago and decided to read it again to see if it was as fine as I remembered. And it was. It has been referred to as semi-autobiographical, which makes the story seem authentic. It tells of 16-year-old Deborah, who has been acting strangely for many of those years. Finally, a suicide attempt forces her family to send her to a mental health hospital. To see the inside of the place through the eyes of a patient gives the reader a new look at mental illness and those who struggle with it.

This is not an easy book, but it is so worthwhile. Deborah's work with her psychiatrist, her relations with her fellow patients, and her slow movement back to the real world make an engrossing tale.

I've often heard of schizophrenic patients "hearing voices," but this book gave me an idea of how intricate an inner world can be for one who feels lost in the real world. I heartily recommend the book.

Where is the new afterword by the author as promised on the cover?

The novel is a work of genius by the woman who lived it. However, her diagnosis of schizophrenia is now being called into question because she was cured through lengthy psychoanalysis, and therapists today rely on quick diagnoses and drugs instead. Alas, the author's new afterword is missing from this kindle book.
