Putting Sutherland on Trial

Sutherland argues that legal distinction between causal responsibility for evil and moral blameworthiness for evil is at the heart of a Hegelian theodicy in the Book of Job, where God's authorship of evil may be excusable on the grounds that it is necessary for the production of a higher good. I found this approach new and innovative. It is significant improvement on the traditional Augustian theodicy which draws heavily on the Book of Genesis and blames man for all the natural and moral evils in the world. The connection between human sin and natural evils just isn't there. It is a significant improvement on the tradional Irenean theodicy which draws heavily on the Epistles of Paul and views everyting as a means to character development. Job is just not in need of character development. And the evils he suffers are just too excessive for any normal character improvement.
I think his background as a Canadian criminal defense lawyer really helps his presentation of the legal arguments in the Book of Job.
I think his background as a Senior Fellow at the Mortimer J. Adler Centre for the Study of the Great Ideas really helps his presentation of the moral arguments in the Book of Job.

1. Dr. David Clines, author of Job 1-20 (Word Biblical Commentary) "I found the work very impressive, personal and authoritative. I am sure he is right about the centrality of the lawsuit metaphor, and who better than he to explore that."
2. Dr. Norman Habel, author of Job (Old Testament Library) "The text is extremely well written, provocative and should grab the interest of many educated folk. The court metaphor is indeed central to The Book of Job. God as the source of evil will shock some. I like the direction of this argument. His forceful focus on the Oath of Innocence is great. I agree that at the end Job does not sin or confess sin or repent of sin. Nor does God really answer the charge of unwarranted suffering. Yet Job is declared innocent implying, as he says, that God is the cause of this suffering."
3. Dr. Gerald Janzen, author of Job (Interpretation) "I am impressed with his achievement. His work in ancient Near Eastern sources is apt, and his attention to other studies on Job, by biblical scholars and others, is exemplary. Many, of course, have worked on issues of law and trial in Job; but few bring the expertise to it that his own training and experience as a lawyer furnish him. Regardless of whether one is in agreement with its various details or overall thrust, one will want to take seriously into account the perspective and analysis he provides."

Excellent study on Job

This really is a groundbreaking book. Robert Sutherland, a lawyer, explains his theory that the Old Testament Biblical book of Job is about Job taking God to court for not keeping his promises (i.e. God promises to bless righteous people.) For very many reasons I believe this theory makes sense.
The book of Job really is significant because it deals with one of modern atheism's great historical objections to faith in God - that the innocent suffer in a world that a good God has created.
In my opinion this book explains clearly what the book of Job meant in the cultural context in which it was written. Sutherland uses these insights to clarify what it might mean to us today as well.
One of the best books on Job I have ever read.

OUTSTANDING!

This is a beautifully argued book and has provided this Presbyterian preacher with a foothold into a better understanding of the book of Job. This is a great resource and I recommend it highly--as I congratulate the author on a very clear, easy to read, believable argument/ thesis on the central issue of the book of Job. I have decided to preach a sermon series on Job following Easter this year and needed a good introduction and overview of the issues involved. There are loads of resources. Out of all the books that I am currently working through on Job, I have found this is be the most helpful. Sutherland has done an outstanding job (no pun intended!). [Well, maybe].

Harold Cruse is best known for 1967's The Crisis of the Negro Intellectual, an influential call for black autonomy, warning against integration as a strategy. Edited by regular Washington Post contributor William Jelani Cobb, The Essential Harold Cruse: A Reader includes essays from the early 1960s on race, bohemianism, James Baldwin and Cuba; three chapters of Crisis, three from Rebellion or Revolution (1968) and further essays and speeches from the Black Power era; one chapter from Plural but Equal (1987) and a selection of other post-Black Power writings that address theater and music. The introduction by cultural critic Stanley Crouch is useful, but a more complete and analytical intellectual biography is still wanted.

Editor Cobb (visiting assistant professor, history, Spelman Coll.) here offers essential reading for anyone interested in black politics and culture. Cruse is known mostly for his classic text, The Crisis of the Negro Intellectual, and his anti-integrationist and black nationalist views. His writings are respectful of some of America's greatest thinkers and cultural workers, e.g., James Baldwin, Lorraine Hansberry, and W.E.B. DuBois, but he doesn't hold back when eloquently disputing their ideas and actions. Cruse brings his critical analysis to bear on issues like black leadership and aesthetics, the interrelationship of politics and culture, civil disobedience, capitalism, the establishment of a black independent political party, and the realities of American culture topics still worthy of debate today. The reader is arranged thematically and chronologically, from Cruse's years in the Communist Party and as a playwright in Greenwich Village (1951-63) to the publication of Plural but Equal. A 1997 interview with Cruse closes the collection. Cruse's legacy is awe-inspiring, and this new work is highly recommended for public and academic libraries. Essays for the Cause

Harold Cruse was one of the most intellectual and insightful men of his time. The Essential Harold Cruse:A Reader is a collection of essays that provides into how he was thinking and what he thought as a black man during times, past and present, of racial strife and struggle.
Mr.Cruse critiques some of the most well known people of his time. Chapter four of the book sticks out in mind, for example. James Baldwin, one of the most well known and respected author's ever, wrote a play called Blues for Mr. Charlie. Mr. Baldwin was emphatic when discussing Mr. Charlie that it was not a Negro play, but just a a play that had some resonant social themes. Cruse criticizes Baldwin for not being true to himself or to the cause. Mr. Cruse was very outspoken and always wrote or said what he thought.
The Essential Harold Cruse:A Reader edited by William Jelani Webb was a very difficult book to read at times because some of the essays were very indepth and I felt as though the author was talking over my head and overanalyzing. On the other hand the collection of essays was insightful and informative and I feel that in reading this book that I learned a lot.

Perfect!

After all of these years this compilation of studies by Mr. Cruse is still relevant. His analysis aren't simply incisive or alarmist. They are underpinned by a logic that cannot be negated. 'Rebellion or Revolution', 'Plural but Equal' and 'Crisis' should be be read in their entirety as well. When one peruses the bookshelves, its ostensible that this kind of scholarship is absent from contemporary Black thought. This is a great collection.

About the Author

Mignon F. Ballard grew up in a small town in Georgia and graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in journalism. She is the author of six previous mysteries featuring angelic sleuth Augusta Goodnight, The Christmas Cottage, an inspirational fantasy, and The War in Sallie’s Station, a novel about growing up in rural Georgia during World War II. Glory to the newborn King! Peace on earth and mercy mild...

It's the Christmas season in Stone's Throw, South Carolina, but peace on earth is not on the nativity program this year. Fear and anxiety have taken over the town once again after the death of a stranger out at the long-abandoned ancestral home of Lucy Nan Pilgrim. Lucy, along with her friends, is puzzled by the man's seemingly accidental fall from the empty house's balcony and soon becomes frightened when his death is tied to a mysterious locket, old ghost stories and family secrets that extend far beyond their town's little borders. Will there be broken hearts and broken lives under this year's Christmas tree or can the Thursdays (who really meet on Mondays) solve the mystery before one of their own is hurt? Alone, they may not have a chance, but with the heavenly help of Lucy's guardian angel, Augusta Goodnight, they just might!

Mignon Ballard brings Southern coziness and warmth to the table once again in this installment of her charming Augusta Goodnight series. With its sassy humor and yummy-sounding recipes, this book was a delight! Settling Augusta with Lucy in Stone's Throw has allowed Ballard to develop a cast of characters whose personalities are now well-established, allowing the reader to feel a deeper connection to the series that wasn't present in the earlier books. The ongoing plots threaded throughout the past few books - including Lucy's romance with quirky Ben - are also a nice addition, providing additional depth to the book. Though this means that Augusta takes a secondary role in the book, I've always felt that this was a better place for her than in the forefront. All in all, a nice cozy read.

charming amateur sleuth urban fantasy

Everyone's favorite Guardian Angel Augusta Goodnight is still staying with Lucy Nan Pilgrim in the small town of Stone's Throw, South Carolina. It is the Christmas season; Augusta's favorite time of the year. She, Lucy and their friend Ellis seek the right tree for their church fellowship. They are looking on the grounds of Willowbrook, owned by Lucy's cousin, when they find a dead man on the porch below the mansion's balcony; the guard rail is broken.

While everyone tries to identify the John Doe, they are also happy for their friend Idonia who avoided love for years, but is involved with newcomer Melrose DuBois, who gave her a locket as a sign of his affection. When Lucy Nan and Ellis visit the caretakers of Willowbrook, the Tanseys, they see a picture of the couple's dead daughter wearing the same locket that Melrose gave to Idonia. The dead man is identified as Dexter Clark, the son in law of the Tansy's' dead daughter. Dexter's Aunt Opal Henshawe is also killed; Lucy Nan and Ellis know the events are obviously related even Melrose's disappearance. However, what that connection is remains mysteriously unknown as they seek to identify a killer without becoming the next victims.

Living up to her surname Augusta is the personification of goodness as she is able to make those in her circle feel better about themselves. While she cannot directly help find the culprit, Augusta assists Lucy, Nan, and Ellis on the quest. They each have an inner strength so when they team up, they can move mountains. Mignon F. Ballard is a wonderful storyteller who enchants her audience with this charming amateur sleuth urban fantasy.
