About the Author

Ned Horning started his 20-year career at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. For nine years he was involved in remote sensing applications research with spatial scales ranging from individual leaves to continents. This was followed by nine years working as an independent consultant where he worked on NASA-based education outreach to promote the use of satellite imagery in teaching and assorted conservation remote sensing projects. For the last two years Mr. Horning has been the Remote Sensing / GIS Program Manager for the American Museum of Natural History's Center for Biodiversity Conservation where he is actively involved in promoting and applying remote sensing tools for conservation.

Dr. Julie A. Robinson joined the International Space Station Program at NASA Johnson Space Center in 2004, was named the Deputy Program Scientist in 2006, and Program Scientist in 2007. As Program Scientist, she serves as the chief scientist within the ISS Program, representing all research on the ISS, and providing recommendations to NASA Headquarters. She also continues interdisciplinary scientific work in ecology and remote sensing. Her most recent major collaboration was in developing a distribution network for global maps of coral reefs to make them accessible to natural resource managers in developing countries. She was assistant editor on the book: Dynamic Earth Environments: Remote Sensing Observations from Shuttle-Mir Missions (Wiley, 2000). She earned her Ph.D. in Ecology, Evolution and Conservation Biology from the University of Nevada, Reno in 1996.

Dr. Eleanor Sterling is the director of the American Museum of Natural History's Center for Biodiversity and Conservation (CBC), where she oversees strategic planning and project development, leads fundraising efforts, and manages a multidisciplinary staff of over 30. Under Dr. Sterling's direction, the CBC established the Remote Sensing and Geographical Information Systems Facility. The GIS lab supports existing CBC research, and drives independent research projects by identifying potential survey sites, analyzing deforestation rates in focal study areas, developing and implementing spatial and non-spatial databases, advancing predictive modeling, and creating persuasive visual aids to enhance conservation strategies. Dr. Sterling has extensive expertise developing environmental education programs and professional development workshops, having trained teachers, students, and U.S. Peace Corps volunteers in a variety of subjects related to biodiversity conservation.
Woody Turner has worked at NASA Headquarters in Washington, DC for over 20 years. Currently, he is the Program Scientist for Biological Diversity and Program Manager for Ecological Forecasting activities in the NASA Science Mission Directorate. As such, he supports and oversees research activities using NASA remote sensing systems to understand the environmental underpinnings of biological diversity at scales ranging from landscape to global. In addition, Woody has started a NASA ecological forecasting program, which brings together observations and associated models to understand the impacts of human activities on biological diversity. His graduate degrees are in international relations and conservation biology.
Dr. Sacha Spector, Invertebrate Conservation Program Manager at the Center for Biodiversity and Conservation, oversees a number of projects related to developing scientific resources and practical approaches for invertebrate conservation. He also directs the CBC's Invertebrate Biodiversity Laboratory. Dr. Spector's research focuses on understanding and modeling patterns of insect communities' distributions across landscapes and their relationships with plant communities in order to define large-scale conservation plans that benefit insect species. Dr. Spector also serves as an adjunct assistant professor at Columbia University, where he teaches conservation biology and insect conservation, and as Chair of the Terrestrial Invertebrate Red List Authority for the IUCN Species Programme. He received his Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Connecticut in 2001, where he held a NASA Graduate Student Researchers Program Fellowship.

About the Author
Oswald Chambers (1874-1917) is best known for the classic devotional My Utmost for His Highest. Born in Scotland, Chambers had a teaching and preaching ministry that took him as far the United States and Japan. He died at age forty-three while serving as chaplain to British Commonwealth troops in Egypt during World War I.

Oswald Chambers is unique in that he always challenges your Christian walk in everything he writes. This book is no exception. If you are satisfied with "Your Best Life Now" and 17 Steps To a Better Church Pew"; then stay away from this book it will poison you from ever settling for the trendy and trite best sellers again. You will be challenged to live a holy life based on prayer and obedience to God's word. You will be forced to reevaluate your faith and how you are serving the King of Kings with your time, your words, your pocketbook. Obedient thinking man's book, read it too grow beyond your wildest imagination.

Praise for the Christian Disciplines

This book is a way of looking deeply at the true life of Christ and helping us to live like he did. This book help me to learn and see the breath and preciousness of the fruit of the spirit Self Control. It has brought me into a deeper relationship with Jesus. I have taught these principles in my Sunday School class and have seen the same thing happen in others lives. I highly recommend this book to anyone longing for this type of fruit. It is not a book to be read casually and its principles must be worked. It is not a feel good and lay it down reading. It took me a long time to get through it as I had to process and work the disciplines into my life. SO GLAD I DID!

Christian Disciplines is an exceptional book from Oswald Chambers. This is not a quick read book as it is much more. This book is a study book and many Biblical answers to questions which reflect the lives of both Christians and non-Christians how to live by GODLY principles. It is a very thought provoking book which can lead to a life with better understanding how we should live with all of our neighbors and friends if we take the time to study this book. I count this book as a definate addition to anyone's library and who have a thirst for knowledge which can lead to peace.

Performing Glam Rock Review

I recommend this book to rock music aficionados who hunger for deeper analysis and more thoughtful work than is the typical fare for books about this genre. It helps to have some interest or fond memories for glam rock, but the chapters about performers one may not know that well or never cared for (e.g., Suzie Quatro, for me) are as compelling as those about ones personal faves. While some of the discussion may be a tad academic for the casual reader, I urge the casual reader to read on, because he will learn something and be entertained. The author is well aware that writing a book is a performance of sorts, and does not ignore his obligation to keep the reader entertained even as some sophisticated and/or obscure concepts are dealt with.

Defining this moment in rock music

Glam Rock was a short lived moment in popular music that essentially lasted only about five or six years, say from 1970 to 1975. In 1970 we were long past the time when Ed Sullivan would only show Elvis from the waist up. The pill has made basic changes in the outlook of the young towards sex. Here in the US, the Viet Nam war, Watergate and Kent state were changing the view of the people.

In music the time was ripe for a change and a series of musicians did that with a new form of rock that featured extremely theatrical performances with outrageous (for the time) costume, makeup and sets. This was called Glam Rock. It drew upon the history of previous styles of rock and added a theatrical aspect to music that was minimally modified.

This book traces the history of Glam Rock from its beginnings with T. Rex and goes through the advent of Suzi Quatro. It explains what Glam Rock was and a bit about how it evolved into the next phase of music.

Better Hang on to Yourself

Although I've only recently begun to read up on performance studies, it seems to me that Auslander has chosen a particularly illustrative case study in glam rock. Within a genre so explicitly focused on the construction and performance of identity, it's actually a bit surprising that this book hadn't already been written.

While Auslander comes from the performance studies tradition, Performing Glam Rock also serves as a great overview of the genre. The book includes a great deal of history, making it a worthwhile read for anyone interested in the genre. The big guns are profiled in depth to illustrate the glam's traits: Bolan (style), Bowie (theatricality), Roxy Music (gender) and Suzi Quatro (more gender, specifically female masculinity).

Overall, an accessible and compelling read.

Excellent, but one important point missing...

Every Christian who believes that the Bible is God's Word should read the first part of this book, whether they agree with the author's stance or not, or whether they are interested in the controversy or not, since it covers quite a bit of background information relating to the history and nature of New Testament translation, including its history, major translations, translators, and other key figures, information about the nature of the greek manuscripts, and so on.
Most of what I would comment about on this book has already been said, so I won't push the point much further.
However, I would like to add another point which James White seems to have overlooked in his book, I assume because of his lack of international/missionary experience:
I come from Singapore where not everyone is fluent in English, or even knows English, much less read English. For the ethnic Chinese who only reads and understands the Chinese language, the only Bible they can read would obviously be on that is translated to Chinese. Unfortunately (or fortunately?), none of the Chinese Bibles, as far as I know, are translated from the TR, and you cannot find a Chinese Bible translated from the King James version.
Now that's just the Bible in Chinese, where there are a few versions/translations. How about those other Bibles in languages where there's only ONE translation (mostly translated by UBS, and not translated from TR/KJV)?
Those who insist on KJV Only should perhaps remember that there's a whole world out there that does not and cannot understand English, much less KJV English. I supposed they are doomed, unless they learn English, KJV English.
That said, my opinion is that this is probably the best book on the subject. Read it, unless your mind is already made up (see those 1 star reviews).

A REAL EYE OPENER

I grew up in a KJV ONLY home. Went to KJV ONLY Curches and recently graduated from a KJV ONLY Bible College. I knew all along that somehting did not make sense about this position. The more research I did on my own the more and more I realized that the books used to back up the KJV ONLY position, were full of flat out lies. "New Age Versions" from G.A. Riplinger is a prime example. As I studied the Bible and began to hear more and more preachers using this version called the NASB (The MOST literal englsih translation by the way) I decided to buy one and compare it to Riplingers quotes of it in her book. I'm not sure what she quoted, but it definetly was NOT the NASB. NONE of her quotations matched...AT ALL!! This led me to start checking other primary sources including the writings of supposed "ALEXANDRIAN CULTISTS" Wescott and Hort, only to find they werequoted horribly out of context. To make a long story short, after doing MY OWN research I found that theKJV ONLY position could ONLY be backed up by lies, misleadings, misquotations, misinformation, and out right bias.

I say ALL THIS assomeone who grew up ONLY reading the KJV, and DEARLY loving it to this day! However, the fact is I desire accuracy over tradition, and that is why I read the NASB.

When I first looked into this book it BLEW ME AWAY with the amount of incredible info stored in such a short volume. All the research that took me LONG periods of time to accomplish was done, and categorized in this paperback. It was dead on correct too. If you want the kindest, fairest, and easiest to understand assesment of this great debate over Bible translations pick this book up. It DOES not bash the KJV, in fact the author actually PRAISES the KJV. So please, before barking out your opinion on this issue, from either side. KNOW YOUR FACTS!!! Pick this book up TODAY!!!

Highly recommend for defending the bible

Incredibly well researched, but the best part is that he presents it with a lovely, humble spirit. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, and how exciting to learn about the history of how God preserved his word. If you are witnessing to anyone who doens't believe the bible is trustworthy, this book will give you lots of good evidence to counter their argument.

If your default "easy" fish recipe is getting old, check out this book!

Sometimes "simple" and "easy" signal a group of recipes that have come together in a book for the sake of creating a "simple and easy" money-maker. Not so with this book from the UK that was published last year and was republished as a Kindle version a few months ago. This Mitch Tonks really likes to eat and cook fish. He talks and cooks fish on TV and has three restaurants in the UK. Some call him a "fish fanatic", plus he focuses on sustainable fish. His love for seafood and his expertise in cooking it, is evident in this book. He has provided us with some unique, (some not so unique, but still worthy of being kept in the same collection), and easy-to-turn-to recipes that will steer you away from your current default recipes.

Here is why this book works for me: I get off work, stop by my favorite oriental market on my way home, and pick up a whole fish to throw on the grill when I get home. You can't get any simpler: It is a very quick cooking process and I don't get my stove dirty or heat up the kitchen. Yet, I found myself faltering as my fishmonger politely waits for me to choose a fresh fish from the case. Are we getting tired of the same old flavors? Well, if I'm actually asking myself that question, I guess I am...

I needed some new ideas and tricks in my fish-cooking arsenal. Looks like I found this book just in time!

I mention that I prefer to grill whole fish, but I don't want you to get the impression that there is nothing else of interest in this book. The variety of interesting sauces alone is enough to provide great value to this book. As the product page describes, the book covers all the cooking techniques and the "grill" recipes also work in your oven's broiler. If you like your fish filleted, be aware that most of the recipes in this book are for filleted fish. There are some shellfish recipes too, plus octopus. Tonks has also included some cured fish recipes, too.

I dinged this cookbook one star for several reasons: I think the layout is a bit of a hodge-podge. What is marsh samphire? What is gurnard? Besides that, the editors seem to have forgotten that this book is being offered for sale in the US: British norms and names need some interpretation when the cookbook is being touted in the States. None of this really bothers me--I've been a fisherman since I was five, and I've been cooking fish for a long time and I like to do internet searches--but these things might cause some frown lines on the brow of someone less experienced. I must suggest that some of this information might be available in his earlier books: Fishworks Seafood Cafe Cookbook and The Fishmonger's Cookbook. I don't know, because I've not looked at them yet. (But I will soon as they are in shipment to me: They are both available through Amazon and you can pick up a used copy for a song.)

--I grow sorrel in my yard, so I really like the filleted red snapper (or bream) with sorrel, sour cream and cumin "under the grill", (which is under a broiler). It works with spinach, too.
--A salad of grilled small red snapper (or mullet), with cucumber, radishes, cilantro and scallions tossed with a lime dressing;
--There is a simply grilled mackerel served with a food processor concoction of a whole lemon, sugar, pepper, ginger and basil, or with a spiced salt (with star anise and sichuan peppercorns).
--Or grilled sardines with fennel seeds.
--There is a very interesting "barbecue sauce" for octopus: It contains, among other ingredients: Fennel, Dijon, vinegar, ras el hanout, soy sauce, garlic, honey, lemon and chile powder.
--Several squid recipes, with a variety of cooking techniques and flavor combinations.
--I have sage in my garden all year long, so I've grown attached to red snapper (or mullet) with a sauce of fresh sage, anchovy, wine and bread crumbs.
--A combination of ingredients that I've used before--tomato and orange juice--plus other ingredients, combine to make a ragu with a firm white fish and served over penne.
--Sea bass with clams and sherry;
--Skate (or ray) with a salsa of herbs, capers, breadcrumbs and grated hard-boiled egg;
--Roast sea bass with potatoes, olives, herbs and orange and lemon juice;
--Maybe my favorite way with monkfish: A whole tail on the bone, roasted with loads of garlic, sage leaves, rosemary, stock--finished with a bit of heavy cream.
--Gurnard (I sub catfish) braised with celery, onion and hard cider.

One hundred recipes (and this includes some simple sauces and dressings, plus aioli and tartare sauce and such) is not all that many recipes, but I found this to be a very handy book and I've turned to it often as I investigated this book.

*I received a temporary download of Fish Easy from the publisher (through NetGalley). I will loose the download soon and I like it well enough to have put the book in my Amazon shopping cart along with his two old books. As to the Kindle edition, I can't help you there, except to say the download I received is the same as what you see in the "Look Inside" feature on this product page. I was not really impressed with it, but it may be an advanced copy (not finished or fully edited) that we are looking at.

This is a must have book for any table tennis (TT) player which is engaged in competitions at any level.

The book is roughly divided in four sections (1) Prerequisites; (2) Strategy; (3) Tactics; (4) The mental game. In all of these sections you can certainly find lots of facts and thoughts to meditate on. By sure, after you read this book your attitude in front of the table will never be the same it is today. If you follow the recommendations implicitly or explicitly given by Alex regarding strategy, tactics and, mostly, the "mental game", your level of TT proficiency will certainly increase a few points.

This is not a book about TT technique (such as are ITTF manuals, for instance) which enumerates extensively training routines, discusses foot work, has diagrams with the correct positions to play the strokes, etc. The book indeed discusses several technical aspects with some depth, but only those linked with the development of tactics (how to answer to opponent strokes, where to position in front of the table - left, center or right -, etc...); the strength of the book lies in its lucid and applied discussion of the mental issues related with TT playing: psychology, attitude, concentration and focus. In fact, 75% of the book can be useful for players of other (racket) sports with some similarity with TT: tennis, squash, badminton and padel.

I participated in a TT tournament one day after I read almost entirely the "mental game" section of the book, and I can assure you: I've never had an "attitude" (in the most broad sense) in front of the table as I had then, and it has really been implanted in me by "The Next Step". This book is really, really going to change for the better the way how you play TT and, eventually, will contribute to change and improve other facets of your life.

If you're like me, a beginner-intermediate level player, self-taught, developing techniques to acceptable levels and still enter any competition with uncertainty, don't hesitate: just buy this book and start reading.

I'm currently at an impasse: I tried practicing the strokes, played training matches but still lost important and closed matches without a clue on how to improve my game. The information in this book helps light the path for me. Now I need to focus more on strategies and tactics with my mental game. Just playing good strokes is not enough any more.

This book is not an autobiography like his previous book, breaking 2000, which is also a good book. But it was written in clear, systematic, analytic style that hits to the heart of the matter. This book doesn't teach how to do strokes but tells you how the strokes are built and how to tweak them for better results.

Could not find a better book about table tennis than this.

Excellent book IF...

A rare and great book if you are not looking for instructions on how to play strokes. I have the Breaking 2000 as well but like this one much more. Reaction time is too short in table-tennis, to play well requires a level of thinking beyond the simple mastery of all the strokes. The author delves into all the advanced aspects of applying the tools. I have read many of the author's referenced literature yet found his summary views very clarifying and helpful. If I have a minor criticism it's that the book has occasional spelling/typo errors (e.g. 'then' i.o. 'than') and other clunky English constructs. I think this book is at a level that deserves a careful re-edit. Nevertheless the author is a very effective communicator and I am glad he decided to put his invaluable thoughts into writing.

Very usefull !

The book was really useful as we've hiked the island this summer. There were just few moments when the description of the route wasn't quite correct, but it didn't lead to any dramatic consequences - you just use your common sense to find the way. The book is small and very light, has just the necessary comments and some pictures for inspiration. After this one I've purchased few more guides from Rother and I am really looking forward to using those during my new walks.
