a catholic professor on religious tolerance

This book, although interesting, was not what I expected. First off, the vocabulary of the book is geared quite specifically toward catholic readers, in its use of latin and esoteric references. It's not an easy read. It does contain some good points about holding on to the christian faith through changing times, but it is presented in a bleak and pessimistic way. If you have the patience to wade through the language and negativity, it certainly makes a good point about staying open to new ideas while holding on to traditional beliefs.

About the Author
Howard Spodek received his B.A. degree from Columbia University (1963), majoring in history and specializing in Columbia’s newly designed program in Asian Studies.  He received his M.A. (1966) and Ph.D. (1972) from the University of Chicago, majoring in history and specializing in India. His first trip to India was on a Fulbright Fellowship, 1964–66, and he has spent a total of some seven years studying and teaching in India. He has also traveled widely throughout the United States, Latin America, Asia, Africa, and Europe. He has been a faculty member at Temple University since 1972, appointed Full Professor in 1984. He was awarded Temple’s Great
Teacher award in 1993.

Spodek’s work in world history began in 1988 when he became Academic Director of a comprehensive, innovative program working with teachers in the School District of Philadelphia to improve their knowledge base in world history and facilitate a rewriting of the world history program in the schools. Immediately following this program, he became principal investigator of a program that brought college professors and high school teachers together to reconsider, revise, and, in many cases, initiate the teaching of world history in several of the colleges and universities in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Those projects led directly to the writing of the first edition of the current text (1997).

Howard Spodek has published extensively on urbanization in India, including Urban-Rural Integration in Regional Development (1976); Urban Form and Meaning in South-East Asia (editor, with Doris Srinivasan, 1993); and a wide array of articles, including analyses of working women’s organizations. In addition he wrote and produced the documentary film, Ahmedabad (1983). He has written on his experiences with world history faculty at the college and high school levels in articles in The History Teacher (1992, 1995). He has received funding for his research, writing, teaching, and film from Fulbright, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Science Foundation, the American Institute of Indian Studies, and the Smithsonian Institution.

Pretty good, but overpriced

Used this book for a high school freshman World History course. Overall it was good, it contained accurate information and sometimes the material was pretty interesting. Sometimes the page layout could be confusing however, with extra necessary text boxes or picture captions. The overall organization of the book didn't make complete sense in relation to the course of actual world history.
As far as textbooks go, however, this one was pretty interesting!
One last note--why does this book cost so much?? It has a thin cover, isn't very thick, not an excessive amount of pages...I don't understand!

Its good. Its funny. Its my pick for this years best 'How to' guitar book

I bought this with a view to upgrading my jazz-guitar skills but discovered this book offers a whole lot more than guitar playing instruction. I am a better musician for reading it, plain and simple. Richard Niles is a masterful educator because while his approach is light-hearted, a lot of knowledge is packed into every laugh.There is a place for humour, nay a need for humour, in education, and this strikes a chord with me. Congratulations on maybe the most efficient ‘How to play guitar’ book I have yet come across. Its certainly the funniest. Recommended for all guitar players out there with room for improvement.

I feel like I'm beginning to know what I'm doing

This book is a MUST have for anyone who wants to express themselves, not only on guitar, but on bass, piano, or perhaps even sitar! I've been playing professionally for half a century, and for the first time, since I cracked open this book, I feel like I'm beginning to know what I'm doing. And while I am learning to master my musical language and craft, Dr. Niles keeps me laughing. This is the most informative, easy to use, and fun music text I have ever used. My only complaint is that he didn't write it decades ago. 8 out of five stars!!!

There are some additional technical exercises including 3-octave G Major and G Minor scales and arpeggios.The revised CD complementing the book includes new recordings by William Preucil, Concertmaster of the Cleveland Orchestra. The piano accompaniment is performed by Linda Perry on acoustic piano. These performances were recorded without reference to a metronome and have a human feel to them. The Suzuki Method of Talent Education is based on Dr. Shinichi Suzuki's view that every child is born with ability, and that man is the son of his environment. According to Dr. Suzuki, a world-renowned violinist and teacher, the greatest joy an adult can know comes from developing a child's potential so he or she can express all that is harmonious and best in human beings. Students are taught using the mother-tongue approach.

This is book 5 in the Suzuki series. By now you know what you are doing. The cd is good for ear training, and the songs are quite pretty.

About the Author
Adriana Teodorescu (born 1982) is currently a Postdoctoral Researcher at "Petru Maior" University of Targu-Mures, Romania. She has previously worked as a Researcher at the "1 December 1918" University of Alba Iulia, Romania, and spent time as a Visiting Scholar at The American University of Paris in 2010. She defended her PhD thesis at Babes-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca in 2011, at the Department of Comparative Literature, and earned an MA in Sociology (2013) from the same university. She has co-organized the annual "International Conference Dying and Death in 18th-21st Century Europe" since 2010. She is the co-editor of the Dying and Death in 18th-21st Century Europe volumes, published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing, in 2011 (volume 1) and 2014 (volume 2), and contributed to the volume Cultural Encyclopedia of the Breast (2014, Rowman and Littlefield Publishers). Her fields of interest include death studies, cultural studies, comparative literature and gender studies.

About the Author
Linda P. Case earned her B.S. in Animal Science at Cornell University and her M.S. in Canine/Feline Nutrition at the University of Illinois. She teaches companion animal science and behavior in the Animal Sciences Department and at the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Illinois. She owns AutumnGold Consulting, which provides support and technical writing services in companion animal care, behavior, and nutrition. She and her husband own and operate AutumnGold Dog Training Center, in Mahomet, IL. Linda is a member of Delta Society, the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT), the American Society of Animal Scientists (ASAS), and is a certified instructor with the National Association of Dog Obedience Instructors (NADOI). She and her husband share their lives with three dogs and three cats and enjoy distance running, hiking and traveling with their dogs.

At last companion animal professionals, dog owners, and adoption counselors have a superb comprehensive reference source for canine development and physiology, learning theory, behavior, health and disease, and nutrition, all in a single volume. Previously it was necessary to have on hand several books, each covering one or at most two of these topics. While the primary audience for The Dog is undergraduate students in animal sciences programs and other students in professional programs, the book readily serves a broader audience of breeders, trainers, kennel operators, humane society personnel, and veterinarians, and it is entirely accessible to the general dog-owning public. Separate sections on the benefits and responsibilities of dog ownership and factors to consider in selecting a dog make the volume particularly valuable for shelter personnel, adoption counselors, and anyone considering acquiring a dog.
Case combines academic credentials as a specialist in companion animal nutrition (her previous book is Canine and Feline Nutrition: A Resource for Companion Animal Professionals, 1995) with training and long experience as a behaviorist, dog trainer, and college educator. Not surprisingly, the chapters on nutrition are thorough yet concise, offering important information otherwise unavailable to the non-specialist interested in the nutritional needs of dogs and in industry practices of dog food formulation and production. The sections on behavior provide cogent explanations of developmental stages, communication signals, social interaction, the principles of learning, and training techniques, as well as an excellent overview of behavior problems. Case's balanced and incisive discussion of the dominance model of social interaction (and its misuses) is particularly welcome.
At $34.95, the volume is priced between a college textbook (many of which now cost twice this price) and a trade book. In fact, we can be grateful to the Iowa State University Press for keeping the cost of this excellent volume within reach of the general public. Separate works on canine behavior, nutrition, and health would easily exceed the cost of this publication. The Dog is hardcover, beautifully illustrated with line drawings, and includes an extensive bibliography of recommended readings, a glossary, and an index. Volunteer adoption counselors at the Champaign County (IL) Humane Society are highly encouraged to read The Dog to expand their knowledge of topics frequently raised in the course of counseling adopters. This book contains lots of great information on the behavior of a Dog, it also gives alot of information on health care, history, and training methods that work, because you understand how the dog thinks, and why it thinks that way that it does, it is a heavy read, but well worth the time that you put into it, It also makes a great reference.

About the Author
Larry Gomez began his study of percussion at a young age, working with various teachers to learn about the world’s different traditions and instrumentation. He continued his studies following an interest in philosophy that led him to schools from Virginia to Greece. He later traveled to India to continue his study of Indian percussion and to further investigate eastern philosophy. Upon returning to the US, he received a juris doctorate with a concentration in environmental law and policy from Vermont Law School. His passion for drums and philosophy provided the impetus to begin this project, which resulted in The Nomads’ Labyrinth. He currently resides with his family in Brooklyn, New York.

Very nice textbook, goes into a lot of detail and is easy to keep up with. Really covers the very wide range of topics that geology is related to, and how it is related to everyday life.

Kind of beat up

The book was definitely what I ordered and it showed up very quickly. However, it was pretty beat up when I got it. I did buy it used and in "good" condition but dang! Still usable and readable so I can't really complain. I'm happy.
