He touches upon great narrative poets, mainly Homer, and philosophers, such as Empedocles. Other chapters elaborate on the mimetic arts, discuss concepts like plot elements of a great tragedy, the characteristics of a tragic hero, speculates upon thought, diction, style, and grammar, and discusses what constitutes the highest form of art. He concludes that the tragedy is higher art form than the epic poem.

Poetics as we read it today is not Aristotle's original work. Unfortunately, the original work, which was probably a good deal longer, has been lost. What we have today are remnants and translations of his work from his students' notes. John has been active in Alcoholics Anonymous since first taking the 12 Steps in 1981. He has found that a simple inventory, meditation and taking others through the 12 steps are the foundation for comfortable and lasting sobriety. 

John has been leading 12 step workshops for the past 7 years based on his book The Spiritual Solution, Simple and Effective Recovery Through the Taking and Teaching of the 12 Steps. Nearly 2,000 recovered people have taken the 12 Steps at a workshop.

Inspirational Reminder of AA's Roots

'The Spiritual Solution' is an inspirational reminder of the original ideals Alcoholics Anonymous was built upon, especially coming to believe or at least being open to the belief that there is a Higher Power greater than ourselves that is in control of our lives.

The author, a member of Alcoholics Anonymous who used the 12 steps to reach his own sobriety, leads seminars about putting the 12 step program to work in an alcoholic's own life. This book is a written version of The Spiritual Solution seminars he leads that are intended to take a person through the 12 steps in one day.

John H. does an excellent job of taking excerpts from The Big Book, written by the founders of Alcoholics Anonymous, and using them as a way of explaining the intent of the 12 steps and how they were meant to be implemented. In particular, he stresses the need of believing in a Higher Power greater than ourselves or at least the willingness to believe one exists, in order to break away from the self-centeredness that is believed to be one of the things at the heart of alcoholism by its founders.

The Spiritual Solution To Alcoholism is an easily read and understood guide to putting the 12 step program Alcoholics Anonymous was founded upon into practice. It is an exceptional tool that may be used alongside the updated version of "the textbook" the organization follows today called Alcoholics Anonymous.

Wonderful explanation of how to make the steps simple and practical

As a physician who is in active recovery and also who treats addiction
I have often observed how difficult people make the steps to be when in all practicality they are overwhelming simple. John does a masterful job of explaining the historical intentions of the founding fathers of AA in taking the steps. I really appreciated as well his observation of many AA groups getting away from the spiritual nature of recovery. Bravo!

His translations of fiction and poetry have appeared in many publications, including "The New Yorker, Harper's," and "Paris Review. "He lives in New York City.

Atheist Masterpiece

First of all, this work was not written by Jean Meslier, and the real title is not "Superstition In All Ages." In reality, this work is Baron d'Holbach's masterpiece, "Good" or "Common Sense." Due to the severe restrictions on the press in the 18th century, d'Holbach published virtually all of his work under the names of famous dead people. Amazingly, the only edition of this fine work that is still in print does not even credit the real author of the work! Nevertheless, the substance of the book is the same. To be honest, this is one of the best atheist tracts ever written. It is a more cogent presentation of the ideas that Holbach set forth in his famous "System of Nature." He completely destroys any rationale for "God," or anything else of the supernatural bent. He relentlessly attacks Christian dogma, revealing just how truly absurd it is. Moreover, he also demonstrates how harmful religion has been to individuals and to societies, and why it is a highly immoral force. Overall, this is still a devastating and profound exposition of atheist ideas. Although I agree with most of his ideas, I must admit that I am not inclined to follow his materialism or determinism/fatalism. Beyond this, I would recommend this work to both atheists and theists alike. The former will be exposed to some refreshing ideas, and the latter will surely be in for quite the shock, as their superstitions will be thoroughly undermined, if of course, they make use of their rational faculites.

As it is famously said; the most convincing document in support of atheism is the Bible, I would have to add that this is the second most convincing. Succint, superbly rational, and simple in its complexity, this treatise should be required reading for all.

Tough and going right for the kneecaps, this book is a masterpiece. Many of these arguments still have religious types scratching their heads.
