Transforming Worldviews: An Anthropological Understanding of How People Change, by Paul G. Hiebert

In the past, changes in behavior and in belief have been leading indicators for missionaries that Christian conversion had occurred. But these aloneor even togetherare insufficient for a gospel understanding of conversion. For effective biblical mission, Paul G. Hiebert argues, we must add a third element: a change in worldview. Here he offers a comprehensive study of worldviewits philosophy, its history, its characteristics, and the means for understanding it. He then provides a detailed analysis of several worldviews that missionaries must engage today, addressing the impact of each on Christianity and mission. A biblical worldview is outlined for comparison. Finally, Hiebert argues for gospel ministry that seeks to transform people's worldviews and offers suggestions for how to do so.

From the Back Cover
"Transforming Worldviews is, in many respects, the capstone of Paul Hiebert's work. This book provides valuable insights for all people who engage in God's mission in the varied contexts of the world in this century. It is Hiebert at his best. A superb contribution to missiology. A lasting legacy!"--Tite TiƩnou, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School

"Transforming Worldviews is Hiebert at his best! For the first time, all of his major missiological insights--from set theory in church growth to the flaw of the excluded middle to critical contextualization--are integrated into a single volume. Transforming Worldviews, in which Hiebert wrestles with one of the most difficult concepts for us to understand and explain, is a fitting exclamation point to a career in which some of the most important evangelical missiological thinking of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries was done."--A. Scott Moreau, Wheaton College; editor, Evangelical Missions Quarterly

"Paul's wide-ranging scholarship, profound faith in Jesus Christ, deep insight, creative thinking, and wholehearted commitment to world evangelization are all evident here. Paul is a mentor, teacher, and guide to all of us involved in thinking about the mission of the church. This book is a wonderful example of his stimulating thought. Everyone interested in communicating the gospel among today's multiplicity of cultures will want to listen to what Paul Hiebert says in this book."--Charles Van Engen, Fuller Theological Seminary; founder and president of Latin American Christian Ministries

"The late Paul Hiebert's work on worldviews is mission anthropology at its best. This book is his final testimony to the centrality of worldview transformation at the heart of biblical conversion. It is an instant classic--clear, readable, useful, and compelling."--Dana L. Robert, Boston University School of Theology

"If you could pick one missiologist to sort out the tangled nest that surrounds the word/concept 'worldview,' it would be Paul Hiebert. In Transforming Worldviews, Hiebert does not disappoint. Once again he surveys the landscape majestically, explains clearly, and proposes wisely and faithfully."--Terry C. Muck, Asbury Theological Seminary

A fantastic and important work
By Michael K. Severe
Transforming worldviews covers a full range of anthropological ideas and applies them to the concept of worldview. Scholarly in nature, its tone is readable and it applies important and diverse disciplines and concepts to thinking about worldview. This book is a major contribution. It is not just discussion of worldview but how worldviews are formed, how they may be critiqued and how they can be transformed. Very interesting discussions and applications of modernism, postmodernism, semiotics (sign theory), cultural analysis, and "glocalization." Plenty of illustrations and charts that assemble, systematize, illustrate and make understandable a vast array of information.

This book broke away from the typical simple and unhelpful discussions of worldview and places it within its scholarly debate and research. Hiebert deftly applies worldview to Christian missions and church work. He offers significant and helpful insights into ourselves and our culture as well as ways to engage and change.

Personally this work challenged my perceptions of worldview, knowledge and culture while introducing me to many new disciplines and concepts.

Easier Said than Done
By M. Edwards
Out of the 30 books I've read so far this year and the 6 or 7 of a theological/missiological nature, this is the meatiest of all (It's probably also one of the fattest at 333 pages). I would highly recommend it not just for Christian international workers, but especially for North American pastors and Christian workers as well, as all too often we are completely blind to the assumptions that lie behind our worldviews as they persist unchallenged in our host cultures.

Beginning with the concept and characteristics of worldviews, the late Dr. Hiebert then moves on to discuss worldviews of small-scale oral societies, peasant societies, modern and postmodern worldviews, and finally, the "glocal" worldview. He then sums up by discussing what a biblical worldview is and how worldviews are transformed.

I found Hiebert's treatment of what he calls "critical realism" (as opposed to positivism and instrumentalism) to be one of many nuggets in the book. Simply put, there must be a great measure of correspondence between the world outside and the worlds we construct inside for us to survive in the world. Human knowledge does not consist of photographs of reality (as positivism suggests) or of collages (as instrumentalism affirms) but of montages and maps that can be tested to determine their truthfulness.
The pictures on pages 318-319 vividly illustrate how different configurations can be imposed on the raw data of our experiences and how people grow in their perception of worldview. The short discussion in the last chapter on people movements and "muliti-individual" conversions was also something I can continue to keep in my mind in my ministry context here.

I am reminded that our role as agents of change is "neither that of the conservative nor that of the anarchist" but that of a subversive agent - to seek to transform worldview gradually from within and to bring people back under the allegiance of the true Lord (p. 322). One way to transform worldviews in the resistant rural society where I am presently living (which reflects aspects of all of the worldviews listed above) might be in focusing to bring change to the families of foreign brides, to help them find stability as entire families are discipled in Jesus Christ.

Certain parts of this book were a little tedious to wade through, and large sections dealing with modernity and postmodernity were expanded treatments of what I learned before from other books and from Hiebert's fellow Trinity professor Tite Tienou 20 years ago when he was at Alliance Theological Seminary. Nevertheless, as I fan through the pages of the book again now I see I underlined multiple sentences on almost every page. Although it will take some time for you to get through, this book will definitely challenge you to think!

Once curiosity that caught my attention is that apparently neither in the chapter about the biblical worldview, nor anywhere else, does Hiebert seem to address the topic of hell. This may be because he prefers to talk in relational and fuzzy categories rather than intrinsic and digital sets (read the book if you do not understand what these terms mean) and in turning away from idols and turning always each day toward the Lord (e.g. "does Jesus remain the ultimate reference point in our understanding of the kingdom? p. 279). Nevertheless, I found the apparent absence of any reference to hell a bit curious.

My only other complaint is that this book does not really talk about how to transform worldviews, as the topic suggested. This is not a how-to book. Wouldn't it be wonderful if the process was that easy?

Important tool for understanding our own and other worldviews
By Tim Lubinus
Transforming Worldviews is a must read for anyone working or living cross-culturally. Worldview analysis is necessary for understanding and communicating in a new culture. This understanding only comes with careful analysis and reflection, not just more time spent overseas. It is possible to have vast experience living cross-culturally, but still have little understanding of the underlying worldview of that culture.

The first step is to acknowledge how our own worldview (fundamental cognitive, affective, and evaluative presuppositions a group of people make about the nature of things, and which they use to order their lives) interprets and distorts our understanding of other worldviews. It is as if we have a set of glasses permanently affixed to our face through which we interpret all the data that we observe. Because of this, we can not be a neutral observer of other cultures and their worldview.

In Transforming Worldviews, Hiebert helps readers to understand the concept, function, and characteristics of worldviews while coloring his explanations with examples of people interpreting the same data differently because of their worldview discrepancies. When communicating cross-culturally, we need to understand these differences, or we may find that though we have given information clearly based on our worldview, the listener's world view causes him to get a different understanding than we may intend. With fundamental differences in the understanding of creation, time, history, purpose, cause and effect, etc. it is very difficult to get a clear understanding about beliefs and behavior. At times missionaries have focused on transforming a person's beliefs and behavior and later found that, if the worldview is not also transformed, instead of embracing biblical faith, he may have only altered behavior and added Jesus to a list of gods.

After Hiebert gives an explanation of some methods of analyzing worldviews, he explores small-scale oral societies, peasant world views, the modern worldview, the worldview of late modernity (or post-modernity) and post-postmodern or Global Worldview. These chapters are outstanding and valuable for anyone working to understand their own worldview, divergent worldviews in your own culture, or who want to work cross-culturally.

Finally Hiebert described and analyzed a biblical worldview and gave steps to help people as they are transformed in their worldview, beliefs, and actions by their encounter with Jesus Christ. I recommend this book to anyone who would like to use worldview analysis in order to better understand how people think and process information in order to communicate more clearly and accurately.

From the Inside Flap

In the 1960s, the state line corridor between Mississippi and Tennessee harbored an underworld of gamblers, crooks, mobsters, and murderers. During this time, Buford Pusser, sheriff of McNairy County, took a hard stance against the vices and villains threatening the safety of his city in southern Tennessee. In his six years as sheriff, Pusser jailed more than seventy-five hundred people. He was stabbed seven times, shot eight times, and held his own when he got into a fight with six men at once: three of them went to the hospital and the other three went to jail.

Beneath the tough exterior, however, Pusser fostered a softness for his family. After Pusser's wife, Pauline, was murdered in an ambush, which he himself barely survived, he was left to care for his children alone. With the support of his family and community, he raised his children for the next seven years, until he too met an unexpected and dramatic death. Pusser's life was turned into a film, and the film turned him into a legend. Now for the first time, Buford Pusser's daughter presents the story of her father's life and legacy from the family's perspective.

In this intimate and devoted biography, Dwana Pusser examines her father's life from his childhood in Adamsville, Tennessee, through his incredible tenure as sheriff, his sudden stardom in the 1970s, and his controversial death by automobile accident in 1974. With feeling and fondness, Dwana shares her private childhood memories alongside the stories of the thrilling feats that made her father famous. More than a history of his life, this volume is a study of Buford Pusser's presence in today's popular culture, for Dwana traces her family story to the present day and reveals never-before-seen documentation regarding the death of her father. Filled with respect and love, laughter and fear, and intrigue and reflection, the chapters in this volume unfold with the momentum of a heroic epic as Dwana embraces all of the complexities of her own family legacy.

[Back Flap]
The daughter of Sheriff Pusser, Dwana Pusser is a wife, mother, and grandmother. Still living in the county where her father was born and raised, Dwana is actively involved with the Adamsville City Commission and Chamber of Commerce, along with tourism in the state of Tennessee. She worked for many years in radio broadcasting and also operated Pusser's Restaurant in Adamsville for nine years. She keeps alive the spirit and feats of her legendary father by maintaining a Web site in his honor and hosting the annual Buford Pusser Festival in Adamsville.

From the Back Cover

"I have the utmost respect for Dwana and the entire Pusser family. The incredible legacy left behind by her father, Buford, will be forever remembered as one of great integrity, strength, and heart. It was an honor for me to have captured the spirit of Buford Pusser while filming Walking Tall, and it is certainly an honor to know the family and call them friends."
--Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, actor and former professional wrestler

Donning an alligator trouser belt and equipped with a .41-caliber magnum, Sheriff Pusser meant business. Serving as the sheriff of McNairy County, Tennessee, from 1964 to 1970, Buford Pusser made a name for himself as the fearless lawman who walked tall and carried a big stick. While publically he was a rough-and-tumble hero, privately Buford Pusser was an old-fashioned family man with a complex story, which, despite the efforts of previous biographers, has never accurately been told.
After watching her father's life story unfold in books and on film for more than three decades, Dwana Pusser has come forward with her own authoritative biography of the legendary American sheriff whose story has captivated so many fans. Filled with intimate details, loving and painful memories, and new documentation never before revealed about Buford Pusser's controversial death, Dwana Pusser's tribute to her father is an inspired story of success, perseverance, and strength.

THE TRUE STORY OF A REAL AMERICAN HERO
By Michael A. Jaquays
For anyone who is familiar with the legend of Buford Pusser through the "Walking Tall" movies and short-lived television series, this book -- told through the loving memories of daughter Dwana -- will reveal the truth behind the Hollywood versions of his life's events. And those events are no less spectacular, nor less tragic, in reality. Sheriff Pusser's unending dedication to eradicating corruption in his community led to the death of beloved wife Pauline, and nearly fatal injuries to Pusser himself that left him scared for life, in an ambush shoot-out.

And later, as Pusser helps with the creation of the first "Walking Tall" film plus prepares for a promising new career in the Tennessee government, he lost his life in a car crash that to this day remains a mystery.

Dwana's first-hand recollections paint a much more vivid picture of the real man behind that sheriff's badge than the movies ever could. With a loving and compassionate manner, she relates her own story of this tough, no-nonsense bear of a man she knows as "Dad." A different side of Pusser comes out through her memories of his commitment to his family, a dedication as unyielding as his quest for justice.

Comparisons between fact and fiction are inevitable, and we find although names and exact situations have been changed in the filmed versions, basic plots are virtually intact. And the events lead up to Pusser's tragic demise in a fiery crash -- one where in fact Dwana really was quickly on the scene to be with her Dad as he died.

Dwana's revelations of motives for the suspected murder are revealed for the first time in the book and are shockers. The final "Walking Tall" film insinuates the murder stems from Pusser's sudden popularity caused by the first movie starring Joe Don Baker (who Dwana says was like a second father to her, while Bo Svenson and Dwana didn't get along at all). Dwana's own research plus first-hand testimony she came into possession of has formed another conclusion, offering motive and opportunity as well as an eye witness who tried to alert the family before the attack.

It's a story only one person could tell, and I am thankful that Dwana has decided to share her family's triumphs and tragedies with the world.

A walk to remember...
By Eric Howard
Because I am the same age as Dwana it is easy for me to follow her story on an emotional level, knowing how I felt at that age at that time. I remember 1973 as the summer of "Walking Tall." Although I didn't see the movie until it came out on TV, I became an instant admire of Buford Pusser. Before I saw the movie I did read the paperback version. I feel that Buford Pusser is one of the rare icons whose true story is more dramatic than the Hollywood version. While his beating and revenge were not as violent as in the movie there are many experiences in his carreer that surpass the films. Buford Pusser first made a name for himself when he pulled serveral teenagers from a stolen car, stuck on railroad tracks, just before it was hit by a train, he was a one man sheriff's office untill he brought in enough fines to hire a few deputies, one was the first black deputy in the county's history. Another time he was involved in a high speed chase when he shot into the car of an escapee and paralizing the man, a young man that he had great affection for. Buford Pusser's shooting of a convicted murderer hold up in a hotel room would today be responded by a SWAT team, Buford got him all on his own.

Buford Pusser was famous before the movies and was far from the down and out ex-sheriff as portrayed in Walking Tall III. Actually, he was being considered for a run for Gov. of Tenn for awhile.

This book has many photos of Buford, a man who always seemed to be smiling, no matter what he had been through. Dwana does not shy away from the darker side of her father. She believes that he could have played a part in the killing of "Towhead" White for the murder of his wife.

Dwana's life after her father's death was heartbreaking and also inspiring. She tells behind the scenes stories of the making of the movies and her opinions on the actors who play her father (Joe Don Baker, Brian Dennehy, and Bo Svenson) as well as the story behind the 2005 remake.

There is much to admire about this book, it's subject and it's author, I wish her well.

The True Meaning of Courage!
By William
I grew up in the south Georgia of the 60's and was a teenager when the 1973 film, "Walking Tall," hit my rural community by storm. Like so many others of my youth, I saw the film and was immediately attracted to this story of a man who seemed larger than life and did the right thing the first time, every time. It was not until I was awakened by my mom about a year later (1974) and was told that Buford Pusser, the REAL man instead of the movie version, had been killed the night before in a car crash. I was 15 at the time ... I still recall how I felt more than 35-years later. Many of us view movies and the events in them as just entertainment, but this wonderful book by Dwana Pusser (the legendary sheriff's daughter) makes it clear that Sheriff Pusser was not just a cinema creation like Dirty Harry or Jack Bauer. He was a real person who loved, laughed, and wanted to raise his family just like the rest of us. Dwana had me hooked on page #1 of the introduction: "My mother was murdered ... when I was six years old. My father died in my arms when I was thirteen." The book practically read itself to me after that beginning. I finished it in one night and was moved beyond words. Dwana reveals a degree of courage and responsibility hard to find these days by telling such a personal and moving account of her life, lived out in sorrow from two tragic, horrific losses while the country was clapping and cheering. But what would one expect from the daughter of the man who personified courage and responsibility? This man who simply wanted to do his job became a celebrity, dating beauty pageant queens, meeting with Johnny Cash, hanging with Elvis, etc. He was a celebrity because THEY wanted to hang with him, not so much the other way around. It all boiled down to a man who could not be bought, and Dwana is the living proof that he was not the only one to pay the price for that dedication. I find it fitting that I received and read this book as our nation prepares to remember Memorial Day. Thanks, Dwana, for sharing this moving and personal story with us, the legion of followers who, though we never knew your Dad, still mourn his passing and honor his sacrifice. Thanks to your Dad, men like him, and your efforts to keep his memory alive, we will continue striving to walk tall!

By S. Walker
I am a home inspector. This is a great book for the new inspector as well as the more seasoned. It is full of practical advice. Spot on tips on where to find the most common issues, recognizing issues and just a bunch of practical advice. This book was written my Michael Litchfield and Roger Robinson. Unfortunately, Roger passed away before the book published. Roger was a LEGEND in the inspection profession. He won the two highest awards in the profession - the John Daly Award from the California Real Estate Inspection Association (CREIA) and the Philip Monahon Award from the America Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI). Roger is one of only five individuals to win both awards. Roger spent countless hours helping new and not so new inspectors learn the craft. He was a very special person. This book is a great legacy. I think this will be required reading for inspectors for many years to come. If you are serious about being a home inspector - you need this book in your library.

Amazing book a must have for any home inspector from beginner to advanced.
By P. Holzmann
Being a home inspection business owner I can say that this book is great. Real world examples and explanations, color photos and it is a great training, learning and review book. This book is written in a very good straight forward manner and the constant reference to real world inspections is very helpful. The color images are complimented with excellent drawing and illustrations which help to bring concepts home. Our business we regularly include illustrations in our reports to help clients understand concepts about defects we find, so seeing this used in this book is great.
In conclusion no matter what size your inspection company is this book is a great resource. You are sure to learn more and also it is a great tool by giving you clear examples to how to explain things to your clients.

useful information, lots of on-site photos
By Home At Last
Head and shoulders above the others. Very complete, useful information, lots of on-site photos, crisp illustrations. Enough background to tell you how something should be constructed, and clear explanations about what you're seeing when you find something irregular or not-to-Code. Robinson has inspected 6000 or 7000 houses in his career and Litchfield has written a dozen books about homebuilding--a team that knows what it is talking about.

Meet the Cars is currently the one to get
By Coheteboy
I'm a pretty big fan of Pixar's CARS and was actually disappointed that the DK's CARS ESSENTIAL GUIDE just didn't give me the knowledge that I wanted. And what is it that I want? I want a book that gave me the background info not on the main characters - but EVERYONE ELSE. I'm talking about each and every other race car (besides the main three) and a whole lot more.

This book is currently the CLOSEST at doing just that, giving you a short paragraph back story on *almost* every car seen in the film, including the year, model / make of the car as well. Did you know that every race car has an individual name just like Lightning McQueen? I sure didn't and you'll find them all here (not even the Mattel toys give you the name of the individual race cars).

I'm sure in time there will be an expanded book as they've left out a handful of background characters (excluded from the book are some racers like LEAK LESS and NITROADE) and they're missing some of the names on a few as well (the book lists Chief No Stall, not Roman Dunes which is his name). Despite the incomplete nature of the book, this is the next best resource for CARS you can currently buy, following the BluRay of the movie itself.

And just to be clear, this IS a children's book so don't expect hardcore Star Wars type bios and stats pages. So if you or your kid is more interested in reading about the different cars than about Radiator Springs or the Piston Cup, this is the book to get. If the photos on the amazon page doesn't help, pick up the book at the book store and give it a careful glance if this is the book to add to your collection.

About Cars
By G. Sarria
This book is for real fans.
Inside you will find the description of most cars you watched in the movie. Sadly, it's missing the four cars from the highway at night gang (boost, wingo, dj and snot-rod).
All in all, the quality of the book is excellent, hard cover, very fine pictures and a full poster.

This is the perfect book for any cars fan. I have a three year old boy that destroys these books because he looks through them so much. He likes to look at every car and ask me his name.. this goes on and on until we go through every car in the book. Takes forever!! ...then when we finish the book, he starts over!! ahahah high quality hard cover book. worth every penny!!
