A World Split Apart: Dualism in Western Culture and Theology, by M. James Sawyer

Christian faith and theology always reflect the culture patterns of thinking, understanding and worldview in which they are planted. Western Culture for nearly 2500 years has looked to the philosophical heritage of ancient Greece to interpret reality, particularly the dualistic patterns of thinking set forth by Plato and Aristotle. In contrast to this Greek dualism, Christianity arose out of the Hebraic worldview whose thinking patterns are holistic, as opposed to dualistic. But both Catholicism and Protestantism have been held captive to various forms of dualism since the fifth century.
Dualism has robbed Western culture of freedom and cut us off from and hope of a true knowledge of reality in itself. Instead it has limited knowledge to mere appearances. In the past century, the rise of the theories of Relativity and Quantum Mechanics has shown that reality is holistic and interrelated rather than reflecting two underlying irreconcilable (dualistic) realms. A World Split Apart provides a survey of dualism and its effects on Western culture and theology. And shows that we can truly have a holistic understanding of reality, and opens the door for a more profound, consistent and rational understanding of the Trinity, the person of the incarnate Christ and the implications that these theological realities have for all of life.

A Clarifying History of Western Thought
By Randy P Baxter
C. S. Lewis warned against what he called “chronological snobbism.” In that expression he was making a case for reading “old” books as well as “new” books. He was concerned that our modern views trapped us into thinking there was nothing to be learned from “old” books because we were so much smarter, scientific and modern than the old authors. I think Lewis’s caution could also be applied to our modern lack of understanding of the why, and how of what we think today. Especially when it comes to theology. The universal Church has fractured into some forty thousand denominations, all claiming to teach “what the bible clearly says” and “what the church has always taught.” The fact of forty thousand denominations says otherwise and even a cursory study of church history clearly says that is not the case. The church has struggled and even fought over differing doctrinal views and theologies for two thousand years. Why is that? Christianity was born in a Jewish culture that already had an almost two thousand year history of revelation from God. It quickly expanded into a Greco/Roman world where it clashed with the dominant, prevailing and pervasive culture of the day. The church found itself living in the midst of these powerful cultural forces. Not only did the early church struggle to define its core beliefs it also struggled to communicate what it believed into the powerful and sophisticated cultural milieu in which it found itself. Over time the church succeeded in defining its core beliefs; those things which could not be compromised without losing its very identity. The church stood fast on those things, and compromised on others. The areas where there was compromise probably made sense at the time, given their particular cultural setting. But just like the errant golf shot that looks good off the tee, then curves into the rough or into a sand trap, the compromises made then end up in theological roughs, sand traps or dead ends today. Dr. Sawyer’s book walks us through the historical process of the how and why we think about things the way we do and how we have arrived at where we are today. He explains how pagan Greek dualism infiltrated the thinking of the western church and the devastating impact that has had down to this day. Having this historical understanding will help us chip our way out of the rough and the theological sand traps and dead ends and point the way forward to a clearer understanding of the brilliance of the light that is, and has always been, Jesus Himself.

On the Remarriage of Matter and Spirit
By Andy Barlow
In short, this is a brief history on the repetitive and devastating effects dualism has had on Western culture and theology.

Classic philosophical dualism has tainted the Western worldview ever since its earliest philosophers started speculating on the nature of matter. The result has been pejorative, undermining everything from scientific models of the universe, to linguistic and mathematical theories, to how we envision our relationship with the divine and to how we perceive one another.

In A World Split Apart, theologian-historian, M. James Sawyer invites our Western culture to superintend the remarriage of matter and spirit after 2500 years of a separation attributed to irreconcilable differences. Then, he invites us to a grand reception in which we will all be able to participate in a perichoretic dance in union with the Trinity.

Sawyer calls us to stop baltering around with our dualist-deterministic thinking, to paradigm shift back into the incarnational spirit of Nicene theology, to fully embrace a humble epistemology and to enjoy the propinquity available with our onto-relational God.

A scientific-philosophical-historical-theological read of the western mind
By Paul Yin
The author of this essay takes the reader to an intellectual roller-coaster ride that ascends from science to philosophy at one point, then comes swooping down to history with a sharp turn at theology, passes through a surprising scene of a sci-fi metaphorical Vulcan mind-meld, ending with a formidable diagnosis of the construct of Western mindset what perhaps even Francis Schaeffer has not elaborated in over 250 pages in his How Should We Then Live. When speak of dualism, one tends to recall gnosticism from the ancient past or sometimes contemporary rekindled interest of taoism from the east. Sawyer makes a compelling argument of how the dualistic mindset has infiltrated the western mind in how we see the world, and, therefore, in how we have been interpreting the Bible and doing theology. Those who are interested in science will be intrigued by illustrations like how the Newtonian matrix got dismantled by Albert Einstein, and students of the Bible may be inspired to re-examine their thoughts on “of the Spirit” vs. “of the world”.
